Our programmes

Healthcare and eye health

Free screenings, eye examinations, glasses, medicines, health education, mosquito nets and referral support.

Our health work addresses the conditions that are most common in the South South, and the ones people are least likely to have checked.

Eye health

Every year, to mark World Sight Day, we run a free medical outreach. Beneficiaries receive a full eye examination, and prescribed medicines and glasses are dispensed on the day. Where someone needs more than we can give at an outreach, we refer them on.

In 2024, 428 people received eye care through this outreach. Everyone treated was offered a free two month follow up in partnership with Pristine Eye Care, with a pathway to surgery where that was needed.

Public health

Alongside the eye clinic we screen for blood sugar, hepatitis B and C, HIV and malaria. Early detection changes the outcome for all of these, and many people we see have never been tested. We use the visit to explain why these checks are worth repeating.

Malaria is the most common illness we encounter, so every person seen at an outreach receives a mosquito net.

Where we are going

We are working towards adding breast and cervical screening, and the surgical referrals that follow. These are conditions where early detection decides whether treatment is simple or impossible.
